In moments of peace and solitude, some of your best work will manifest. Hope has its roots in sweet moments like this.

Look behind. Look ahead. Imagine what you will do next. Have hope in your heart, like a glowing ruby in a setting of gold.

Take time between classes to write down your thoughts and impressions. Write about what you hope to accomplish today and in the future, even if nobody sees what you write except yourself.

Be willing to be open and vulnerable when working with small groups.

Collaboration with classmates can provide a sense of excitement and belonging.

As an ESL student, you will have the precious opportunity to interact with students of other cultures. You can learn so much.

A feeling of camaraderie exists at a study table when everyone is working hard together.

Get excited over an assignment that appeals deeply to you.

Sometimes you will become frustrated. It is natural. Stop what you are doing. Eat a snack. Get something to drink. Take a nap. Just don’t give up.

Being with others is enjoyable, but studying by yourself yields thoughtful fruit.

Gather with friends and have fun while learning. Take breaks, and take time to laugh.

Just as light can filter through a window, the light of acquiring new understanding can illuminate you.

Always keep a notebook to write things down by hand. Do not depend on entering all your notes through a keyboard. Feel that pen or pencil in your hand. Watch the words that you have written take shape.

Feeling pleased with what you have written can make you smile. You can see your growth.

Put down that smartphone and exist in a world that consists of just you, paper, and a pen.

Never forget that learning provides its own joy. Feel pride over what you are doing every day.

Take advantage of the technology your campus offers. You paid a great deal of money for your education. Utilize every tool available to you.

There is a treasury of knowledge and fresh wisdom in books, even if they are old and do not appear interesting on the outside.
